I wanted to pass this along as I’ve got many friends, family and homies that have all been affected by Hurricane Sandy. Red Hook in Brooklyn was one of the areas that got hit hardest, leaving nearly the entire area underwater. It’s also one of my favorite areas to visit when I’m in the city, so seeing this devastation really hit close to home for me (literally and figuratively). Help the folks at Gage & Desoto keep the spirit of this community by pre-ordering a jersey. I really need a new long sleeve jersey too, so you bet I’ll be picking one of these up.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Our neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn has been left flooded and in shambles following Hurricane Sandy. Countless homes, shops, artist studios, restaurants, bars, and workshops have been devastated. Despite this recent hardship, the heart of this vibrant community cannot be washed away. While our own storefront office flooded, the losses are minimal compared to the dire situation in the neighborhood.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Castelli Cycling has generously stepped up to produce a pair of special benefit jerseys with us to help raise funds for Red Hook’s recovery. Designed by Jonah Birns, the jerseys will be pre-sold exclusively on Gage+DeSoto until December 1st. After production is complete, we will be shipping these in mid-January.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
All profits from these jerseys will be split between the Red Hook Initiative (RHI) and Restore Red Hook (RRH). The RHI–an established community center–is operating as the critical organizer of relief efforts. Since then, Restore Red Hook has also been set up to help the many devastated small businesses of Red Hook reopen their doors as soon as possible.

The Culture Cycles jerseys are ready! Big thanks to Scotty and Danielle at Catalyst Design here in Burlington for doing the printing, and for the super-quick turnaround. If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard about us getting jerseys, it’s ’cause they’re mainly for outfitting our squad at the Harpoon Point to Point Ride this Saturday. Thus, we only made 15 – many of which have already been spoken for. Once we distribute the jerseys to those of whom already paid us, I’ll let y’all know what’s left to purcha$e.
The jerseys are the Origin-8 TechSport in white with an illustration on the back by Noah Hoose and the Culture Cycles seal by Christopher Norris over the right breast. I’m actually very impressed with the quality of these; they’re full-zip and even have a waterproof pocket for your phone / gadget. See a few more details below.

The folks at Solo Cycle Clothing were kind enough to send me my very own Konig Classique Jersey, of which I’ve been wearing for the past two weeks now. This has quickly become of my favorite jerseys, and I even got a compliment ten minutes into my first ride. The Solo Classique line features timeless retro styling with modern traits and in terms of quality, is probably one of the top-three nicest jerseys I’ve ever owned. It’s made with Nuovotec polyester, a proprietary blend that is comfortable and does a pretty good job at wicking sweat. There are some really thoughtful features here too including knitted arm and neck bands, a silicon elastic waistband for a nice grip, and three pockets on the back including a zipper sleeve – perfect for keeping your iPhone dry.
So far I’m really loving this jersey. It’s handmade in New Zealand, which is rad; but also because I’m planning to do a bike tour there next year. The fit is perfect too. I’m 5’10 and 138 lbs and the small is like a glove, with just enough room. I’m excited to have another jersey in the lineup, now all I need to do is get some black or matching shorts.
