Harpoon Point to Point Ride Hank Stokes

Photos from the Harpoon Point to Point ride have been posted! Here’s an awesome shot of my buddy Hank Stokes. He’d just completed a month-long brewery tour of Vermont by bike and decided to join us for the 115 mile jaunt the day after finishing. Oh yeah, he’s also the mastermind behind The Herringbone Tweed Ride which you may remember from last year – stay tuned for more info on that very soon.

This past Saturday was the 10th annual Harpoon Brewery Point to Point fundraiser ride for the Vermont Food bank. There were rides for all levels of cyclists with 115, 50, and ~30 mile options all of which featured a few rest stops along the way. I remember seeing all the food options at the first stop and being blown away; I took one of everything. Vermont Smoke and Cure jerky, watermelon, 2 Zicos, a couple Clif Bars & Shot Blocks, and a bag of chips were all consumed/stashed before riding the next 30-mile leg. Besides this being a rolling tour of lovely Vermont with miniature buffets along the way, it’s also a a fundraiser and I’m happy to share that team Culture Cycles has raised over $3,100 so far! The ride itself has stacked over $105,000 this year, and there’s still time left to donate.

The day was a blast. We had pretty nice weather for the first 75-80 miles – no crazy heat or sun, and then the skies opened up. The rest of the ride was straight showers and soaked socks. However, it definitely made me ride faster as I wanted to keep warm and the anticipation of free beers had me hustling up hills. I didn’t have glasses, nor do I own a pair of sunglasses (I need to get on that), so descending in pouring rain was a little sketchy. There were three noticeable climbs throughout the ride, mostly long and gradual, and they’re what I blame for the slight knee pain I’ve been feeling yesterday and today. Probably has nothing to do with my 53-39/11-23 setup, or the fact that it’s been some time since my last century.

After 30 miles of cooling showers we’d made it to the brewery in Windsor and were met with hot showers half chickens. I ate two half chickens (1/2+1/2=1), pasta salad, fruit salad, potato salad, vegetable salad, and washed that all down with my 8th coconut water of the day and a few beers. While we were all feasting, our buddy and team mate James was already turned around and on his way back to Burlington, via bike that is. Stoops finished up his day with 240 miles and I hear he still had energy to dance. I went home and ate ice cream.

All in all, the ride was beyond enjoyable and I’d highly recommend it to anyone! I’ll report back once there are some photos to share. This Strava screenshot is from our buddy and teammate for the ride Liam Griffin. I was silly and didn’t bring my computer, so Strava ran on my phone for about 67 miles before dying.
