  • Timbuk2 Celebrates Bike to Work Month in May and June 2014

Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 10.44.36 AM

From the looks of it, I’ll finally have a bicycle this week (after a nearly 2-month hiatus, since moving to Shanghai and leaving my bicycles back in the states) and what better timing than for Bike to Work Month?

SAN FRANCISCO – Timbuk2, a San Francisco original and longtime bike commuting advocate, is celebrating Bike to Work Month this May and June 2014 with nationwide Bike to Work Day efforts, a Facebook sweepstakes, and an array of new cycling products built for today’s urban commuter.

Timbuk2’s mission from past to present is inextricably linked to cycling and city life. Launched in 1989 by a bike messenger with a sewing machine, Timbuk2 has evolved from a small-scale messenger bag company to a global ambassador for cycling in the city. Today Timbuk2 designs bags and accessories for cyclists of all levels, having continuously evolved its product line to correspond with the rise of bike commuting, which increased nationwide by 47% between 2000 and 2011*.

To date, Timbuk2 had donated over $12,000 in cash and products to local, national and global bike advocacy groups, including Transportation Alternatives (NYC), San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Bike Denver, American League of Bicyclists and World Bicycle Relief.

  • Chrome Industries: Bravo & Victor

Here are a couple new products from Chrome, the Bravo and Victor.

The Bravo is a weatherproof rolltop bag that can handle your daily sundries, including a laptop, and still leave you room for a few grocery items on the way home. It expands to 40L, made in the USA and guaranteed for life.

The Victor, which I’m really excited about, is small utility bag designed to keep your daily essentials all in one place. Often, like many commuters, I’ll find myself leaving the house and only bringing a lock, phone, wallet, tool roll, rain coat and lights. Nothing big enough to warrant a backpack or pannier, yet too many items to fit in your jeans. So a bag or the pannier is usually what I bring. This Victor has just enough room for these items and is small enough so that you’re not rubbing up on everyone in the bar with a large backpack. Also US made and guaranteed for life.

    Few more detail shots below.

  • Chrome Industries Free Series: Delta & District Backpacks

chrome delta district free series (1)

chrome delta district free series (2)

I’m really feelin’ the new Free Series from Chrome Bags. Designed for day-to-day use, the Delta and District are more than capable of carrying anything from your books and laptop to a 12-pack and sub sandwich. They’re also built for the long-haul with 600 Denier Cordura with a TPU coating, designed to resist abrasions and moisture. I’ve had my Ranchero pack (similar to the Delta) for nearly 4 years now and it’s still strong as ever; and believe me, I’ve definitely put it through its paces. Be sure to catch the video above, featuring Ed Wonka and the Delta pack and a few detail shots of the bags below.

  • Mission Workshop: Arkiv Modular Bags

Here’s a little preview of what’s on the horizon for Mission Workshop. Debuting shortly, the Arkive Modular Bag series from Mission Workshop features a removable mini pocket / U-lock holster with numerous ways of being setup (i.e. modular). There’s been some skepticism floating around this bag, especially in the comments section of other sites but I’m all for it.

I like seeing innovation and can already see how this system would make my life a little simpler. Each day I wake up, figure out whether to ride the commuter or track bike to work and then comes the dilemma of how to transport my goods. I’ve got a rack and panniers on my VD and a big ‘ole Chrome backpack for track bike days, but my problem is remembering all the little things I transfer between bags. Keys, wallet, phone, lock…you know – this is where the detachable bag might be handy. I’m sure this won’t be the only module available for the Arkiv system either…which has me waiting to see what’s next.

Oh yeah, US-made with a lifetime warranty.

While browsing my feeds earlier I came across these awesome coozies and such from Dank Bags of Seattle. I’ve seen a few attempts at 40 oz coozies and these have gotta be the best looking! Head over to the Dank site for more info on coozies, messenger bags and other made in the USA accessories.

Remember Cycling WMD’s WTF Townie sporting a 40 oz bottle cage? If you’re about your malt liquor then you need both of these!

    Chrome Miller High Life bag

Chrome Bags and Miller High Life….what will they think of next? I’ve been seeing a bunch of beer/sports collabo’s popping up lately – especially in snowboarding. I gotta admit though, out of all the collective projects I’ve seen between such companies, this efforts gotta be the best looking. Have a look at the messenger bag here as well as the tool roll and hip pouch by browsing their online shop.
