Dan of Shifter Bikes & Andy of Fyxomatosis

videos by Gavin Bannerman

Get inside the head Shifter Dan from Shifter Bikes in Melbourn, Australia. I love his stance on bikes and his dedication to his shop & customers. He really connects with cyclist’s passions and recognizes how valuable their riding time is, as his time is just as precious. If your mechanic doesn’t put hours in on the saddle, then how’s he/she going to truly relate to a perfectly tuned bike?

I also watched (listened to) the 52 minute interview with Andy White of Fyxomatosis the other day at work and found myself relating to much of what he said. I too love having bicycles as a common denominator between my close buds, but often am more interested in the individual’s real passions/characteristics. During my days racing, so many folks would get caught up over their personal metrics, wattage and training, and thus, would pretty much just talk about themselves to each other…which can get boring pretty quickly. These days, I’ve been focusing on riding a variety of terrain and bikes, keeping things fresh and planning on taking some more bike camping trips this spring summer around New England. But take it from Dan and Andy, they’ve said it better than me.

If you’ve got headphones, I’d highly recommend both these videos. More at Biking Brisbane.

Specialized Turbo

specialized turbo ebike

Specialized is claiming the Turbo eBike electronic bicycle to be the fastest electronic bicycle yet, and at a max speed of 28 mph it sounds like its got competition beat! What do you guys think of ebikes? I personally think if they’re great. Never ridden one and don’t really intend to ever own one either, but what about all those people fed up with over-paying at the gas pump? If they’ll get more people to drive less then that’s a great thing. Maybe those people will eventually get a “real” bike for the weekends too. Every cycling junky had their gateway at one point or another.

Cardiel & Chrome: Sacramento to Chico

Cardiel is a beast. He recently decided to ride a cool century from Sacramento to Chico to check out the making of the Fortnight bags he has with Chrome.

“On a summer day, Chrome Familia member John Cardiel and a couple of friends rode from his home in Sacramento 100 miles north to the Chrome Bag factory in Chico, CA. The intent was to see his new Fortnight travel bag being made. It just so happened that the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company is two blocks away from the Chrome bags factory. Here is what ensued.

Mission Workshop: Arkiv Modular Bags

Here’s a little preview of what’s on the horizon for Mission Workshop. Debuting shortly, the Arkive Modular Bag series from Mission Workshop features a removable mini pocket / U-lock holster with numerous ways of being setup (i.e. modular). There’s been some skepticism floating around this bag, especially in the comments section of other sites but I’m all for it.

I like seeing innovation and can already see how this system would make my life a little simpler. Each day I wake up, figure out whether to ride the commuter or track bike to work and then comes the dilemma of how to transport my goods. I’ve got a rack and panniers on my VD and a big ‘ole Chrome backpack for track bike days, but my problem is remembering all the little things I transfer between bags. Keys, wallet, phone, lock…you know – this is where the detachable bag might be handy. I’m sure this won’t be the only module available for the Arkiv system either…which has me waiting to see what’s next.

Oh yeah, US-made with a lifetime warranty.
